CAT 2014: Checklist for Study Material & Resources

It's time to bell the CAT again. With just four months left for the common admission test, students are in full groove. Everyone knows the basics now - the sections, number and kind of questions. And exactly when everyone thought they were familiar with the exam, Prometric made a slight, but impressive, change in the test format. Online CAT did give cold feet to many, but with proper preparation and enough practice, the tough nut can be cracked.                                                                                         Before you start your preparation, get down with all the study material and resource bank that you need. These resources can be in the form of books, e-books, sample papers and online forums. Here is a checklist for all the material and resources that would help you inCAT preparation.

CAT 2010 Question Paper
The first thing to start your preparations with is to have a look at the last year's question paper. What does it look like, what is format, structure, number of questions, etc. It is advisable to go through the question papers for the past 3-4 years to get a hang of what is the exam like. Just a thorough reading of 3-4 question papers would be enough to start with.
Books & e-Books
Once familiar with the exam pattern, it is important to have the important study material forCAT. There are a number of books available in the market. Almost all leading coaching centers offer their own study material to students. One of the options is to buy the complete study material from any one of these centers. Some of popular study materials for CAT are offered by Career Launcher, TestFunda, IMS and T.I.M.E. Arun Sharma books and the book on Number Systems by Total Gandha are also highly sought by the aspirants. For vocabulary, TIME's cue cards & Norman Lewis' Vocab book are highly recommended.
E-books are also a good way of accessing the study material and are totally free of cost. But some students find it better to study with offline books as this has been the traditional way of learning for most of us. Most of the coaching centers also have their study resources in CDs & online format, besides the basic paper format.
Sample Papers & Online Tests
After your preparation is complete, next it's time to take some timed mock tests. Even though sample paper sets are available, it is advised that candidates practice only with online tests. Since CAT is now an online exam, taking online sample tests will familiarize students with the dynamics of an online exam. Test Funda mock tests are closest to the actual exam in terms of the feel. It has the same interface as used by CAT. Online tests are also available at Jumbo Tests.
Mock Test Series
Even after you have practiced enough with the online mock tests, it is important to enroll for mock test series. Almost all coaching centers run a mock test series in the month of October. The most important benefit of taking these mock tests is that you can know where you stand. TIME's mock test series have the largest enrollments. Taking a test at par with other aspirants, getting a percentile score each week and going through the in depth analysis for each paper will make it the experience more CAT-like.
Online Forums & Blogs
Last but not the least are online forums and blogs. CAT forums like Pagal Guy, Test Funda & Total Gadha offer a discussion platform for the aspirants to ask, share and discuss. Students can discuss their concerns and queries with fellow students. Aspirants must stay cued to these forums for useful information and tips.
