Civil Services Examination Pattern and syllabus,

Civil Services Examination conducts by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)  in every year  for recruitment to IAS, IPS, IFS, Group 'A' and some Group 'B' services.


Examination dates:-
  • Notifiction of examination:-  November/December
  • Last for receipt application:-  last week of December
  • Date of preliminary examination:-  May/June
  • Declaration of results:-   July/August
  • Date of main exam:- October/November

How to Apply:-
Register on http://www.upsconline.nic.in (Detailed instructions for filling up online applications are available on the above mentioned website)
The application charge for male candidates is Rs. 100/- only. There is no application charge for female and SC / ST / Physically Handicapped candidates.
All candidates, whether already in government service, government owned industrial undertakings or other similar organizations or in private employment should submit their applications directly to the Commission.


Eligibility:-
1.Nationality
For Indian Administrative Service, a candidate should be a citizen of India.
For Indian Foreign Service and other services, a candidate should be one of the following:
-A citizen of India
-A subject of Nepal or Bhutan
-A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 01/01/1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India
-A person of Indian origin who has migrated from other countries with the intention of permanently settling in India (detailed list of countries available on official website)
provided that a candidate belonging to categories above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the the Indian government.
2.Age Limit
A candidate must be atleast 21 years of age and less than 30 years of age as on 01-08-2013 for the 2013 exam.
The upper age limit is relaxed upto a maximum of :

3.Educational Qualification
A candidate must be a graduate from a recognized university or a deemed university.
A candidate who has appeared for the final year of bachelor's degree and awaiting result, along with candidates who intend to appear at such qualifying examinations can also apply, provided that they submit their proof of qualification along with the application for the Mains exam.
A candidate who possesses professional and technical qualification recognised by Government equivalent to the professional and technical degree can also apply.
A candidate who has passed the final professional M.B.B.S. or any other Medical Examination but has not completed internship by the time of submission of application for the Civil Services (Main) Examination can also apply.


Scheme of Civil service Examination

The competitive examination conduct in three successive stages
(I)Civil Services Preliminary Examination also called CSAT or           Civil Services Aptitude Test(Objective type).
(II)Civil Services Main Examination (Written test)(III)Interview / Personality Test


Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Examination consists of two papers Both are objective type (multiple-choice questions) carrying a maximum of 400 marks.

The Question Papers (Test Booklets) are set in English & Hindi.

  • Each paper will be of two hours duration. Blind candidates will however; be allowed an extra time of twenty minutes at each paper
  • those candidates who are qualified in the Preliminary Examination.will be eligible for main exam 

Main Examination    
The Main Examination will consist of 9 papers in total comprising of conventional essay type questions.

One of the Indian Languages to be selected by the candidate from the 18 languages included in the VIIIth Schedule to the Constitution (Qualifying Paper)

  • Each paper will be of three hours duration.
  • The question papers for the examination will be of conventional (essay) type.
  • Candidates who obtain minimum qualifying marks in the Main Examination as may be fixed by the Commission at their discretion, shall be summoned by them for an interview / for a Personality Test.
  • The number of candidates to be summoned for interview will be about twice the number of vacancies to be filled.


Interview / Personality Test


  • The interview will carry 275 marks (with no minimum qualifying marks).
  • Marks thus obtained by the candidates (in the Main Examination as well as interview) would determine their final ranking.
  • Candidates will be posted to various services keeping in view their ranks in the examination and the preferences expressed by them for the various Services and Posts.

Important Points:-
  • Students need to first apply for the Preliminary Examination only. Candidates who are declared by the Commission to have qualified for admission to the Main Examination will have to apply again, in the Detailed Application Form which would be supplied to them.
  • Both the question papers are of the objective type (multiple choice questions) of two hours each.
  • The question papers will be set both in Hindi and English. However, questions relating to English Language   Comprehension skills would be provided only in English.
  • Blind candidates would be allowed an extra 20 minutes of time   at each paper. 




    IES(Indian Engineering Service) examination patterns

    IES refers to the services that cater to the technical and managerial functions of the Government of India. The Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) conducts the Indian Engineering Service(IES) exam every year and the Union Government of India appoints IES officers based on the recommendations made by the UPSC.
    Most of the IES officers are associated with the public sector units including roads, railways, inspection, manufacturing, power, public works, and telecommunication. Graduates clearing or topping IES are usually from Indian Institute of Technology or Indian Institute of Science

    Educational qualification for IES Exam
        >A Bachelors degree in Engineering from a recognized university or                  equivalent (B.E/B.Tech)
       >An M.Sc degree or equivalent with Wireless Communications, Electronics,       Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as special subjects are acceptable for         certain services / posts

    Age criteria for IES Exam
    The candidate can be of any age between 21-30 years as on 1 January (for general candidates) of the year they are taking the exam. The upper limit is relaxed for certain sections of the candidates(sc/st, obc and certain other categories as specified in para 3-II if notice.

    Fee: Rs. 100/- (Rupees one hundred only) (No fee for SCs/STs/Physically Handicapped only)

    IES Exam pattern
    The entrance for Indian Engineering Service comprises of atwo types

        Marks deduction: 5 percent marks may be deducted for illegible handwriting
        Points (upto 5%) may be deducted from the total points of a candidate if his/her handwriting is not easily legible.

        There are three Objective papers and two conventional papers in IES Examination. In Objective papers there is a 1/3rd Negative marking for wrong answers i.e. 33.33% of allotted marks will be deducted. The examination of objective paper will be conducted as:

          The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is India's central agency authorized to conduct the many examination . list below

          Some Examination Details Below:-

          Civil Service Exam(CSE):-
          The candidate must be an Indian National
          having either appear for the final Graduation Degree or B.Tech. exam or pass in any stream from a recognised University within the age of   21 to 30 years with upper age relaxation for reserved candidate.

          Eligibility:-
          The Civil Service Exam is conducted for IAS and IPS..
          >> The candidate must be within the age limit of 21-30 years if general, 21-33 years if OBC and 21-35 years if SC/ST..
          >> Candidate must have completed graduation in any stream from a recognized institute..
          >> General candidates are allowed a maximum of 4 attempts..for OBC the limit is 7 and for SC/ST/PD there is no limit..


          Indian Engineering Service(IES):-
          The candidate eligible must be an Indian National having either appear for the final B.Tech Degree exam or pass in any stream from a recognised University within the age of 21 to 30 years with upper age relaxation for reserved candidate.

           Eligibility:-
          >> candidate must be within the age limit of 21-30 years, 3 and 5 years of age relaxation for OBC and SC/ST respectively..
          >> Candidate must have completed his/her B.Tech/B.E. in any one of the following streams :-
          > Mechanical Engineering
          > Electrical Engineering
          > Civil Engineering
          > Electronics and Comm Engineering                                                                                                            
                                                                                                                                                       Combined Defence Service(CDS):-
          The candidate must be an Indian National having Either appear for the final Graduation Degree or B.Tech. exam or pass in any stream from a recognised University within the age of 19 to 25 years with good Physical and Mental Fitness.

          Eligibility:-
           Male candidates can apply for IMA, AFA, NA and OTA and female candidates can apply only for OTA. The education qualification for applying in CDS is as follows:

          • AFA: Candidates willing to apply for Air force academy should have studied Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level along with a degree from recognized university or bachelor degree in engineering /technology. Women candidates can not apply for Air force academy.
          • IMA: Aspirants willing to apply of Indian military academy through CDS 1 2014 examination should have a degree from recognized university.
          • NA: Aspirants applying for Indian naval academy should have engineering degree from any recognized university or institute
          OTA: All other men candidates as well as women candidates applying for Officers training academy should have a degree to qualify for minimum educational qualification required by UPSC to fill application form of CDS 1 2014    


          Special Class Railway Apprentice(SCRA):-                                                       The SCRA entrance pattern in entrance examination comprises written test in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, General Knowledge, and Psychological Test (Mental Ability). The selected candidates are called for an interview, which is followed by a medical examination. The standard of syllabus is that of Class XII (CBSE equivalent). The notice for the examination, along with form and syllabus Mathematics, Physics ,Chemistry , English language is brought out by the UPSC around the months of June-July. According to the new rules issued by the Ministry of Railways, the exam is now conducted once every two years.


          The selected candidates undergo a four-year rigorous training programme in Mechanical Engineering, for which the Institute has a Memorandum of Understanding with BIT, Mesra, Ranchi. The semester system of BIT, Mesra is followed, with workshop training sessions during the holidays at BIT, Mesra. The apprentices get a stipend in the scale of Rs. 4000-4400 with Dearness Allowance,making the final emoluments upto Rs. 7400, apart from medical benefits, privelege passes and PTOs.                                                            
          Eligibility:-                                                                                                      SCRA Age Criteria: Candidates must have attained lower age limit of 17 years of age & must have completed  upper age limit of 21 on 1st august of year of examination.

          Educational Qualification: 
          • 1.) To take admission in this examination, candidates must have passed Intermediate or an equivalent examination in first or in second division.
            2.) University or board is of govenment approved.
            3.) Mathematics and at least one of the subjects Physics and Chemistry as subjects of the examination.
            4.) Mathematics graduate or students with at least one of the subjects Physics or Chemsitry as their degree level may apply also
