1. | Nationality |
• | For Indian Administrative Service, a candidate should be a citizen of India. |
• | For Indian Foreign Service and other services, a candidate should be one of the following: |
- | A citizen of India |
- | A subject of Nepal or Bhutan |
- | A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 01/01/1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India |
- | A person of Indian origin who has migrated from other countries with the intention of permanently settling in India (detailed list of countries available on official website) |
provided that a candidate belonging to categories above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the the Indian government. |

• | A candidate must be atleast 21 years of age and less than 30 years of age as on 01-08-2013 for the 2013 exam. |

3. | Educational Qualification |
• | A candidate must be a graduate from a recognized university or a deemed university. |
• | A candidate who has appeared for the final year of bachelor's degree and awaiting result, along with candidates who intend to appear at such qualifying examinations can also apply, provided that they submit their proof of qualification along with the application for the Mains exam. |
• | A candidate who possesses professional and technical qualification recognised by Government equivalent to the professional and technical degree can also apply. |
• | A candidate who has passed the final professional M.B.B.S. or any other Medical Examination but has not completed internship by the time of submission of application for the Civil Services (Main) Examination can also apply.
Scheme of Civil service Examination
The competitive examination conduct in three successive stages
(I)Civil Services Preliminary Examination also called CSAT or Civil Services Aptitude Test(Objective type). |
(II)Civil Services Main Examination (Written test)(III)Interview / Personality Test
Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Examination consists of two papers Both are objective type (multiple-choice questions) carrying a maximum of 400 marks.
The Question Papers (Test Booklets) are set in English & Hindi.

- Each paper will be of two hours duration. Blind candidates will however; be allowed an extra time of twenty minutes at each paper

Main Examination
The Main Examination will consist of 9 papers in total comprising of conventional essay type questions.

- Each paper will be of three hours duration.
- The question papers for the examination will be of conventional (essay) type.
- Candidates who obtain minimum qualifying marks in the Main Examination as may be fixed by the Commission at their discretion, shall be summoned by them for an interview / for a Personality Test.
- The number of candidates to be summoned for interview will be about twice the number of vacancies to be filled.

Interview / Personality Test
- The interview will carry 275 marks (with no minimum qualifying marks).
- Marks thus obtained by the candidates (in the Main Examination as well as interview) would determine their final ranking.
- Candidates will be posted to various services keeping in view their ranks in the examination and the preferences expressed by them for the various Services and Posts.

Important Points:-
- Students need to first apply for the Preliminary Examination only. Candidates who are declared by the Commission to have qualified for admission to the Main Examination will have to apply again, in the Detailed Application Form which would be supplied to them.

- Both the question papers are of the objective type (multiple choice questions) of two hours each.
- The question papers will be set both in Hindi and English. However, questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills would be provided only in English.
- Blind candidates would be allowed an extra 20 minutes of time at each paper.
